Add Text to a Web Page and Import Data

This tutorial will show you how to add text to a web page. It will also show you how to import tabular data from a spreadsheet or database. Working with text on a web page is much more than just typing onto a blank page. It's also about text as a design element of your pages and it's about readability.

Much of what you do to make text look good in a print document also applies for text online, but there are some differences and you need to account for them when you add text to a web page.

The cool thing about Dreamweaver is that it can let you type text onto your web page or you can copy and paste it from other sources, like an MS Word document.. There are several ways to add text to a web page. One way is to simply create a page and start typing but you'll have very little control over the page formatting.

Another way is to create a table and insert the text into the individual table cells.

Open the web page you want to add text.

Click with your mouse in the table cell or area of your web page where you want to add text.

At the insertion bar, begin typing the text that you want to add.

Press the Enter key on a PC to start a new paragraph. On a Mac, press the Return key.

Dreamweaver adds text to the web page based o its default formatting settings, and automatically wraps the text when it comes to the end of the line or table cell.

Importing Tabular Data

This tutorial will show you how to import tabular data in a web page. If you have data or text for a web page that is in a database or spreadsheet, you can import the data as a delimited text file. This includes files that have data that is separated by tabs, commas, colons, or semicolons. A .csv file for example is data from a database or spreadsheet that is separated by a comma. The name .csv stands for comma-separated file (csv).

Once the data has been saved in this format, you can import the data file to your web page in Dreamweaver and format it as a data table. When you import the data table, you can specify the table layout and formatting options you want.

Open the web page you want to import content.

Click in the location where you want to insert the content.

Click the File menu and point to Import, and then click Tabular Data.

Click Browse and navigate to the location where the file you want to import is located. Select the delimited file and then click Open.

Click the Delimiter popup, and then select the delimiter type you used when you exported or saved the file.

Click the Fit to Date or Set To option. If you selected the Set to option, enter a specific width or a percentage of the browsers window width you want (in pixels).

Enter the cell padding and cell spacing you want (in pixels).

Click the Format Top Row popup and select the formatting option you want. Then enter the table border width you want (in pixels).

Click OK.
