Affiliate marketing is another way to make money from your website and to diversify your income online so you're not dependent on one source of income.

As an affiliate, you can build a website on a topic that interests you and make money by earning commissions from the sale of products at companies to whom you refer customers from your website.

You can sign up to be an affiliate to companies that sell products that are related to the content of your website. As your traffic to your website increases, a percentage of those visitors will click on ads from your affiliate companies. A percentage of those people will purchase something and when they do, you earn a commission on the sale.

For example, woodworking and tool collecting has been a hobby of mine for many years. I once owned a cabinet and furniture manufacturing business and I do a lot of woodworking. I wanted to build a website to share some of that information with others.

For me the promise of affiliate marketing has been realized. I published a couple of theme-based information-jammed content sites. Then I monetized them with the cream of affiliate programs, blended in some Google AdSense and other revenues and now realize a steadily growing income from my online affiliate business.

I registered the domain name www.old-woodworking-tools.net and built the www.old-woodworking-tools.net website where I share information about old tools and woodworking.

I began marketing the website and learning about search engine optimization (SEO). SEO is the process of optimizing your web pages so they are found and rank high in the search engine results for keywords that are related to old woodworking tools.

My goal was to get found by search engines when visitors are looking for information about woodworking tools so that I could attract large numbers of visitors to my website.

After I created the site and it started to get a decent amount of traffic, I located a number of companies that sell woodworking tools and supplies and applied to be an affiliate.

Applying to be an affiliate at most programs is free and it doesn’t take long before you can begin putting ads and links on your web pages. I went to the company websites, completed their affiliate application, waited to get approved, and then began promoting their products on my pages.

Then I continued marketing the website using forums, article submissions, Pay Per Click (PPC), and other methods to increase traffic.

Like with Google AdSense, success as an affiliate is all about marketing and getting a lot of targeted traffic to your website. This is the part of making money online that takes time.

Monetizing My Old Woodworking Tools Web Site.

To make money from this site I display Google AdSense ads on the site (via the Google AdSense Program). I also use an in-text advertising program.

As an affiliate, I found that I could sell tools from Amazon and several other woodworking related companies. Every time someone clicks on one of the ads and buys a product as a result of my referral, I earn a commission from that company. I get regular monthly checks from Amazon and a couple of other affiliates.

Where to Find Affiliate Programs

There are many companies that offer affiliate programs. Many of these are managed by the companies themselves.

Many other companies have networks that specialize in affiliate marketing manage their affiliate programs. These companies manage hundreds of affiliate programs under one name. Commission Junction, Google Networks, LinkShare, ShareASale, and ShareIt are all examples of this type of affiliate network.

For most of these networks, you can search their directories by product or advertiser to find an affiliate program that fits well with your website. Once you sign up they also manage your affiliate links, traffic and earning reports. Instead of getting a check from each company, you get a single check from the network that represents all of the sales.
