Using Blogs as Websites - So what is a blog? Here are some definitions:
- A Weblog is a hierarchy of text, images, media objects and data, arranged chronologically, that can be viewed in an HTML browser
- A frequent, chronological publication of personal thoughts and Web links.
- A blog is basically a journal that is available on the Web. The activity of updating a blog is blogging and someone who keeps a blog is a Blogger.
- A blog is a website in which items are posted on a regular basis and displayed in reverse chronological order. The term blog is a shortened form of weblog. Authoring a blog, maintaining a blog or adding an article to an existing blog is called blogging.
- A blog is a different kind of website in which most of the content is in the form of articles that are "posted" to the blog by the blog author (blogger) and presented in chronological order according to the date the article was written.
You can organize the articles by the date they are written, by the category they might fall into based on the subject of the article, or by tags that allow your visitor to search through your articles using any method they choose.
Blogs also have RSS feeds that enable visitors to subscribe to your blog so they can be updated when you add a new article.
The Difference Between a Blog and a Website
You may be wondering if creating a website or a blog is best for you. To answer this, you need to know what the differences are so you can apply the best solution to your needs as a website creator.
Notice that in almost every instance above, the word chronological is in the definition. That's one of the main differences between a blog and a website. Blogs tend to be more "date centric." That is they are typically best for content that is time sensitive in nature and updated frequently.
Many news-oriented websites are in the blog format. Content that isn't best presented in some kind or organized or structured hierarchy and that is frequently updated and current works best on a blog
Website content that is more static or that needs to be in a highly structured, organized, and in a hierarchical format works best as a website. With a regular website you have more control over the organization and presentation of the content.
Content and information that should be presented in a certain order is best done as a website not a blog. It's not uncommon for visitors to a blog to feel like it's difficult to find the information they are looking for, so it's important that the blog owner make sure that they organize it in such a way that the articles are easy to find.
Now that doesn't mean that you can't create static content in a blog, it's just harder to manage and organize in a logical way that makes it easier for your visitor to find it. With a regular website, you have more control over the pages so it may take more time to develop, but it's easier to organize your pages and put them in the categories you want and you can place them where you want in the navigation scheme for your website.
Thinking this through and deciding which format would be best for your content must be done early in the process of planning your website.
