Changing the View / Zoom Tool
This tutorial will illustrate changing the view / zoom tool in Dreamweaver CS5.
When you're working on a document you may not need to be able to see the whole document at once, but sometimes it helps. On other occasions you may want to get in really close to an item in a document. It's important to be able to change the level of what is called 'zoom', and that's what the Zoom Tool is used for.
The tool doesn't change any of the content of your document, it just changes the magnification at which the document is being viewed.
Changing the View
Here is a 'normal' view of one of my pages.

I click the Zoom Tool on the Status Bar to select it, then click in the middle of my active document. The view 'zooms in' and I see this.

Note that the display on the Status Bar shows a magnification of 150%.
If I hold down the Alt key and click again on the document, the view is zoomed out. The Alt key is used with the Zoom Tool to 'zoom out'.
If Instead of clicking in the middle of the active document with the Zoom Tool selected I drag an area with the Zoom Tool, the view is zoomed so that area occupies all of the viewable space. For example, if I select just a few words in the middle of the active document with the Zoom Tool, this is the effect.

Note that the magnification has changed to 283%.
You can, of course, also change the view using the dropdown that is part of the Set Magnification Tool. If I click on that I get a range of preset values to choose from.

If I choose 50% I can now see all of my active document in the document window.

There is also an option on the Set Magnification Tool dropdown to Fit All. This chooses a magnification that makes the active document fit the window as well as possible given its shape and size.
