Create a Web Page from a Template in CS5

This tutorial will show you how to create a web page from a template in Dreamweaver CS5.

You don't have to start making a page from a blank sheet. You can use a template, which can either be one you've made yourself or one that you've got from somewhere else.

We'll cover making your own templates later. Let's look at using templates that already exist here.

To create a web page from a template, you can select New... from the File menu.

However, here's another keyboard shortcut. Use Ctrl+N.

In the New Document dialog select Page from Template on the left.

I prepared a template earlier called Basic Template and you can see it here. If I select that and press Create you can see a page that already has some (dummy) content and some design features, such as the bar on the right with the link buttons.

Don't forget, once I've created my page I still need to give it a title and save it with a suitable name.

We will be using templates to bring consistency of style and layout to our sites, and to save a lot of time when we're developing and maintaining them.

We'll be spending a lot more time on templates later.

If you have no templates of your own yet, the list of available templates will be pretty much empty when you select Page from Template, like this one.

However, all is not lost if you have an Internet connection. Select Get More Content... and you will see the Adobe Marketplace & Exchange.

From here you can select templates from external sources that you can either buy or (in some cases) download for free. When you've had a lot more experience of templates, it might be worthwhile to look around the Adobe Marketplace and Exchange. It could save you some time.
