Google AdSense is a great way to generate income from a website that you create and share information about something that you know a lot about.
I was a former high school teacher and administrator looking to turn my hobbies and interests into something that I could use to earn income. I didn't want to go into retail nor did I want to manage an inventory or have to ship products to customers. I didn't have time to deal with customers because I'm still working. I was looking for something that I could work on in my spare time that would generate an income whether I was working on it or not.
I was able to build and market an informational website and it's become the perfect niche business for me. You can do the same thing! I've been able to publish a high quality information filled web site that at first attracted tens, then hundreds, and now thousands of visitors each day. These visitors to my web site click on my Google AdSense ads and I earn income every time they do.
Google AdSense is the perfect way for someone with a little knowledge and information about some specific subject to build an online e-business that earns income 24/7. How did I do it? I took something that I know and love and created a content rich website that attracts high volumes of motivated targeted traffic and Google provides relevant ads for my site.
Google uses its advanced search engine technologies and algorithms to search out and index the content of my website pages. Then using Google AdSense it delivers ads that are contextually relevant to my website audience. Every time a visitor clicks on one of the Google AdSense ads, I receive money. And because the ads are related to the content that the visitor was searching for, they are more likely to click on the ads on my content rich web pages.
The end result has been this: I convert free traffic on my website (built by me and available through the search engines) into paid traffic (paid by advertisers). Once I got my site to the point that it was being found in the search engines, it grew organically and the traffic kept building and building and so did the income.
I get to continue to focus on what I love to do, creating more high quality theme based content that fulfills the needs of everyone involved. It's a win-win situation:
The traffic and the income take care of themselves. I just keep focusing on creating high quality content and adding additional monetization strategies to my Web pages.
I've now diversified my online business by developing five separate content rich websites about different topics that are generating traffic that helps to increase my revenues and make my online business more stable.
First, I listed all of the things I'm most interested in and know the most about. I used to teach furniture and cabinetmaking and I currently collect and restore old woodworking machinery. It's been a hobby for years. I also love technology and my current job involves training and teaching others how to use new technologies in education.
These are both loves and passions of mine and subjects that I know a lot about. I knew I could create a lot of good content for either one of these topics. For now I'll share how I created my first website about software guides and tutorials.
I started by researching the keywords and the competition that was already out their for sites that provided software and other technology tutorials. For my other site I did the same thing for old woodworking tools.
Based on my keyword research I came up with a topic for my website that I thought I could be profitable and then I began investigating and researching potential domain names for my website. I selected www.guidesandtutorials.com and registered that domain name.
Now that I had a topic and a domain name for my website, I began designing the site following some basic website design principles that I've outlined on this site. I focused on writing tutorials on software applications like PowerPoint, MS Word, Dreamweaver, an audio editing program called Audacity, and several other programs. I wrote page after page of tutorials that taught how to use these software programs. I'm still writing content for this site today and it's never going to be finished. It's frequently updated.
Next, I found a website host to house my website on their Web servers. As I completed the tutorial pages, I transferred them to my website host by uploading the files to their Web servers. Then I followed some other strategies for getting my tutorial pages listed in the search engines. I also began letting other people know about my website so I could generate some inbound links.
Gradually people began to find my website www.guidesandtutorials.com in the search engines. Others found my website and thought it valuable enough to place links to it from their websites. This helped the traffic grow even more because Google likes inbound links to your website and because of that my page rankings increased. Traffic grew slowly at first, just a few visitors a day, but it gradually grew to over 2000 visitors per day.
Below are the website stats for the first month I began creating my www.guidesandtutorials.com website in November, 2006. I averaged just 11 visitors per day and an average of 85 page views per day.

Fast forward to November 2008 when I was averaging 1,300 unique visitors per day and almost 3,000 page views per day. And the site continues to grow even though I haven't been very diligent about creating new content for it. Imagine how many visitors I would have if I had been adding a page of content every week or so which I'm beginning to do now. It's now in the top 1% of all websites.

This took almost two years to get to this point but know that I really didn't do very much to the site during that time. I should have and now that I've seen these results, I'm going back and redesigning much of it and adding to the content. Most all of the content was created in the first couple of weeks when I started the site and being the skeptic that I am, I just let it sit to see what it would do. It steadily grew and now I'm going back and building more tutorials and content to help the site grow even more.
Here's an update to the traffice on this website for November 2009. As you can see the average number of visitors each day to the website has increased by 580 per day and the number of pages viewed has more than doubled.

Making money on an informational web site like this is not a get-rich-quick proposition. If anyone tells you it's easy to get rich quick on the Internet, put your checkbook back in your pocket and walk away. This site took a lot of work and two years to grow. Granted, it might have grown faster if I had spent time each week working on it, but I didn't do that. Now I'm wishing that I had because I believe the site would be getting a lot more traffic if I had spent more time on it.
The terms for using Google AdSense prevents me from sharing how much revenue I generate from this website, but know that it was enough for me to begin working on three or four more sites that will do the same thing.
What's really great about building a content-rich website is that it's a win-win situation for me everyone. I get to keep building content that I'm interested in so it's not a chore to do. That keeps my motivation up. It's good for the search engines because they have a good content site that they can return to users who are searching for information. And finally the visitor to the site gets the information they were looking for in the search engine so they are happy. Everyone wins!
