So you want to know how to make a website. We'll this is a good place to start because there's a ton of information on this site that will help you make a website. Making a website is really quite easy. Making a web page is almost as easy as creating a document in a word processor like MS Word. The really hard part in how to make a website is being able to make one that people are going to find using search engines. That takes a lot more effort, knowledge, and work to build a site that provides quality content and is easily found through search engines and directories.

In it's simplest form, how to make a website can be reduced to about three basic steps.

Step 1. Register a Domain Name

After you've decided on a topic for your website, you'll want to register a domain name so you'll have something to call your website. There are a lot of things to consider when choosing a domain and registering it and if you want to make your website easy for people to find it, you'll need to spend some careful thought before registering one.

Registering a domain name is cheap. You can find registrars that will sell you a domain for less than seven dollars for a year. Other registrar may charge much more, but there's no difference between a domain name for $6.95 and the same one from another registrar for $35.

Step 2: Choose How You're Going to Build Your Website

You'll have a lot of options for how you want to make your website. You can hire a web designer to build it for you. You can teach yourself some HTML skills and learn how to use an HTML editor like Dreamweaver to create your own pages. Or you can use an online website builder.

Each method has it upside and downside. If you want to have maximum control over the look and feel of your web pages and you want to make your website from scratch, you'll want to us an HTML editing tool like Adobe Dreamweaver or a free web page editor such as CoffeeCup . These options give you the control over your site that will allow you to do just about anything you want. But…

… you'll have to consider what you know about HTML, FTP, Dreamweaver, and also think about the amount of time you have to build your website and get it online. You might also want to look into purchasing a website template which will speed up much of your design work.  

If you don't know much about HTML or Dreamweaver or you've never built a web page before, choosing this method may take you a long time and lead to a lot of frustration. But you would also learn an awful lot of useful information if you plan on staying in the web business and managing your own site.

If you're more interested in just getting your site created a quickly as possible and you don't care a lot about the details of how HTML and the code works, you should consider using an online website builder.

This is a good choice for novices or those who want as much control of the site as they can without having to learn all about HTML coding. The only drawback to this method is that you lose some of the flexibility and control over the site.

The last option is the most expensive but can result in a very professionally done website. You can hire a web design company to build your website. The design company will do everything for you and you can probably contract with them to maintain your site. There are some things to consider, however, before choosing to go this route.

Step 3: Find a Web Hosting Company

After or while you're making your website, you will need to find a place to host it for you on the Internet. A web hosting company provides the servers and space to publish your website.

There are hundreds of web hosting companies that provide this kind of service and it's usually not very expensive. You should be able to find web hosting companies that can provide this service for as little as six to ten dollars a month and maybe even less. Depending on how complex your site is and whether or not it's integrated with a managed database, the costs will vary somewhat. The amount of traffic you receive at your site may also impact the cost that your hosting company will charge you.

If you're just beginning with your website, you should be able to find shared hosting (more than one website housed on a server) for about four to six dollars per month. Most of these will offer more space and features than you'll ever be able to use.

Tips for Making Your Website

• Know Your Audience - Who is the audience you want to reach? Fellow hobbyists? Partners? Existing customers? Potential investors? Define your audience. Knowing who they are determines what content you provide.
  
  
• Think About Your Content - Keep you content useful. Provide unique high quality content. Keep it simple and short. Keep it fresh and current. Focus on the needs of your audience.
  
  
• Plan an Organized Structure - Your site should be easy to navigate. Provide a site map of your website. Plan your site so that visitors can find what they're looking for with one or two clicks.
  
  
• Make it Look Good - I probably shouldn't have to mention this, but the look and feel of your website does matter! Make it attractive. Use white space and use graphics that help to explain or illustrate your content. Don't use graphics just for decoration.
  
  
• Update Your Content Often - Sites that are fresh and regularly update their content are visited more often. Archive out of date content. Make sure that you don't have broken links.
