Keywords for Your Website
If you run a business and you advertise in the yellow pages, you know the importance of choosing the proper category for its entry in the telephone directory. In a phone book, your visitor looks for your listing under the category that they think will be the most likely place that you're listing will appear.
Choosing a set of keywords for a search engine is a little different. The point of having multiple keywords for your website is not to get you listed in multiple categories. Instead modern search engines like Google or Yahoo look for contextual relationships between the keywords you choose -- those parts of the definitions of those keywords that they share.
If your objective is getting people (lots of people) to find your website so they can buy your products, find your information or service, or click on your ads, then you must do some research about the keywords that you can use on your pages to make certain that you are found in the search engine results.
Choosing Keywords
The goal of your keyword selection is to build a list of keywords that are popular search terms and will bring a large volume of targeted traffic to your website. These should be keywords that are frequently searched for but not so competitive that you can't get to the top of the search engines.
Begin with the web topic that excites and interests you. Write down the words and phrases that you think people interested in that topic would use as search terms to find information about that subject.
Don't limit yourself to single keywords. Include combinations of keywords and short phrases that could be used to search for your website. Think like the visitors that you want to come to your website. What would they search for? What information are they looking to find? List all of the words you think they might use to find you.
For a money making website, choosing the right keywords will determine your profitability and whether or not you can compete in that niche subject area. The key is choosing keywords that are profitable but not so sought after that you'll never be able to compete with larger websites.
Getting the Right Keywords
You must use keywords in your website copy. More people will find your site if you use the words people use when they search for information about your website topic. You must use those same words within your page content, page titles, page descriptions, heading on your web pages. Use the same language your expect your visitor to use when searching for your site. So how do you find those keywords?
If you want to be successful online, you must spend some time finding out the words your customers really use when they search. Most of the successful online companies will have thousands of keywords. You'll be amazed at the keywords that people will use to find your site.

If you want to be successful, you need to find out what those keywords are. You'll need more than just 20 or 30 keywords, you'll need hundreds if not thousands.
The more keywords you have, the greater the number of people who will find your website. The more people who visit, the more traffic you have, the more money you will make whether it's from selling products or from advertising.

Start by making a list of all of the common keywords and phrases that people would use to find your website. Use an online tool like Wordtracker of the free Google Keyword Search Tool.
