Opening and Saving a Web Page in Dreamweaver CS4
This tutorial will explain opening and saving a web page and templates in Dreamweaver CS4.
Opening a Web Page
Opening a web page is a simple task and there are several ways to do it. You can use the Open section of the Dreamweaver CS4 Welcome Screen, open commands on the file menu. You can open a web page from your hard drive, a network drive, or a Web server using the Universal Record Locator (URL).
By default, when you start Dreamweaver, it will open the last web site you worked on every time you run the program. The primary file type that Dreamweaver creates used Hypertext Markup Language, however, you can create other file types in Dreamweaver too. You can use Dreamweaver to open many other types of text-based files such as style sheets, script files, text, xml, xhtml and html.
To Open An Existing Web Page
Click the File menu, and then click Open.
Navigate to the drive and folder location where you want to open the web page.
Click the Files of Type list arrow or pop up, and then select the type of file you want to open.
Select the page you want to open in the working folder, or type the URL of the page you want.

Click Open.
Open a Recently Edited Web Page
To open a page you worked on recently, Click on the File Menu and point to the Open Recent, and then click the file you want to open.
At the Welcome Screen, click the file you want to open under Open a Recent item.

As soon as you've opened and created a web page, it should be saved with the appropriate file name. The naming conventions that you use to name your html pages should have been defined as part of your web site planning but if they weren't you can still give the page a file name that fits within your naming convention.
Naming Conventions for Files and Elements
When you name your HTML files in Dreamweaver, it's important to follow standard guidelines to make sure your web site works properly on different server platforms and operating systems such as Windows IIS Server, UNIX, Linux, and others. Try to stick to the following guidelines:
- Use dashes (-)or the underscore (_) in place of empty spaces
- Avoid special characters like colons, slashes, questions marks, exclamation points, etc. in file names.
- Use shorter names where possible (without harming your search engine optimization). Remember, however, that the file name on a Mac cannot be more than 31 characters.
It's important to save pages early, that way if there's a problem such as Dreamweaver locking up or not responding, you will be able to begin again with the last saved version. Another reason is for
page validation and error checking. HTML pages must be saved before you can perform any validation on them.
Once you've opened a new web page, either from a new blank page, a template or from a sample. you should save the page with its own unique file name followed by the extension .html. You will have several options depending on how you want to save the file. In Dreamweaver CS4, do the following:
Click the File menu, and then select from the following options:
Save - If the file is new, you will be prompted to enter a proper file name and location for the new page. If the file has been previously saved, Dreamweaver will save this file using the original file name and location.
Save As - Use this option if you have more than one file open, and you want to save all of them as the same time. If any of the files are new, you will be prompted to enter a file name and location.
Save to Remote Server - Use this option if you've set up your remote server, and you want to save the file directly to the server. Use this option, however, with great care, because you are working on files that are live on your server and any mistakes that you may make will be seen by anyone visiting your live web pages.
Saving a File as a Dreamweaver Template
You can also save an HTML file as a Dreamweaver Template. Dreamweaver templates are HTML files with editable regions. Templates are wonderful time savers in Dreamweaver CS4 because you can include many of the common elements on your web page in the template and then whenever you need to update sections, you only have to edit the one template file.
Dreamweaver is smart enough to update all of your other pages so they're just like the template you just changed. Anytime you make a change to a template, Dreamweaver will ask if you want to update all of the web pages you've created that are based on that template. It's a powerful feature in Dreamweaver and saves hours and hours of work.
Save as a Template - Use this option to save the open document as a template. A template is a reusable document that contains editable regions.
Navigate to the drive and folder location where you want to save the file.
Type a name for the file, or use the suggested name that Dreamweaver applies. Follow the suggested guidelines when naming files. Don't use empty spaces, special characters or punctuation. I also recommend that you get into the habit of saving files in all lowercase letters. When files are uploaded to some servers, it will make a difference if your files are named with upper or lower case letters. If you keep them all lowercase, you won't have this problem.
Click Save to finalize the process.
