Optimizing Images for the Web

This tutorial will illustrate optimizing images for the web in Dreamweaver CS5.

Dreamweaver has facilities for optimizing images for the web.

Let's return to the image of Sydney Opera House that was created in Fireworks and that is already on our page.

Start image SOH

With the image selected, click in the Commands menu and select Optimize Image...

The Image Preview dialog appears.

As before, the choice of GIF, JPEG or PNG can be made on the Options page. There are tools for cropping and for adjusting image quality to optimize file size.

There is also a File page where you can adjust the actual size of the image.

One very useful button invokes the Optimize to Size Wizard.

When the wizard appears, specify your target file size and it will adjust the settings accordingly.

This is particularly useful when file size (and hence download time) is your primary concern.

When you have completed your changes, click on OK to save them.
