Point a Domain Name to Your Website
Before you can point a domain name to your website, you must register a domain name. If you haven't done that, please read the article Registering Your Domain Name to find out how to get your own domain name.
You also need to have a web hosting account where your website will reside on specially configured servers called web servers that are connected to the Internet.
A web host basically rents space on their server for your website so that it can be viewed by others on the Internet. If you haven't done this yet or need to know how, then read the article Find a Web Host.
To point your domain name to your website, your web host must allow you to use your own domain name for your site, which is the case for most all commercial web hosting companies.
Point a Domain Name to Your Website
Step 1. Get the Web Host Name Servers
The first think you'll need to do is to obtain the list of the name servers used by your web hosting company.
Name Servers, also called DNS Servers, are the devices that will translate your domain name to the actual location or IP Address for your website. For example, suppose you type a domain name like guidesandtutorials.com into your web browser. For the website to display in your browser, it needs to know the real address of the website. Instead of names, web servers and the Internet use unique numeric address for the website. This is known as the IP address for your website. It's usually in the format like 127.0.0.1. Name servers translate the domain name you use to the actual IP address used by the web servers that host your website on the Internet.
When you lease space from a web hosting company, they will configure their Name servers so that it will provide your website's IP address when there is a request for your domain name. Your domain name must be linked to your web hosting companies Name servers. There are thousands of Name servers working together to make certain that when someone types your domain name into their browser, that it finds your specific web site located on a web server.
You web hosting company will provide you with the name of their Name or DNS servers. If the information is not easily found on their website, just ask them for their Name servers and they will provide them for you. They may have been sent to you in the welcome email you received when you signed up with your hosting company or their may be in the frequently asked questions (FAQ) section of their website or in their knowledge base.
The list of Name servers for a web hosting company will usually look something like NS1.websitehost.com. There will probably be at least two or more name server addresses. You'll need this information for future reference so write it down or print out and save the email that includes this information about your web hosting company. In order to point your domain name to your website, you'll need to enter the name server names exactly as given into your domain name registrar's system.
Step 2. Enter the Name Servers into Your Registrar's Settings
After your obtain the list of the name servers for your web host, go to your domain name registrar and login to the domain name manager. There should be a way to list all of your domain names and a link that is probably called My Domains or Domain Manager.
Select the Domain Name for which you want to set the Name servers. This might be called "Edit DNS" or "Change Name Servers" or something similar. It might also be found under "Edit Domain Name" information. You're basically looking or something that says you can set or edit or change the Name servers or DNS for your domain name.
Once you've found the page to change your Name servers, you will see a form that allows you to enter the names for a Primary Name Server and a Secondary Name Server or it might say Name Server #1 and Name Server #2.
Put your first Name server on the list, the one that usually begins with ns1.websitehost.com into the Primary or Name Sever #1 field and the second one on your list in the Secondary or Name Server #2 field.
A domain name should have at least two Name servers associated with it. Most web hosts will let you enter two Name servers, but some may allow up to six. In that case, and if you only have two Name servers, just enter them and leave the other fields blank.
Once you've set your Name servers, you are done. There is nothing more to do except to wait a while before you can access your website using your domain name. It will usually take 24 to 72 hours for all of the Internet to learn about your change and how to find your website. Every Name server in the world will need to catch up with the changes you made. This is normal and how the Name server system works on the Internet.
