Sorting Table Data

This tutorial illustrates sorting table data in Dreamweaver CS5.

Provided that your table does not have any row/column irregularities (i.e. you haven't got split or merged cells that mean that the number of rows or columns varies within the table) then you can sort the table based on the data in it.

Look at this table of data that we imported earlier.

Before we look at how to sort the data, let's tidy up the column widths. First of all, select the table. Now click on the Table Header Arrow (it's at the top this time).

Select Clear All Widths and Dreamweaver has now optimized the widths.

With the table still selected, select the Commands menu and then Sort Table...

You now see the Sort Table dialog, which lets you choose the options for sorting the data in the table.

The dialog lets you specify which column in the table to sort the data on. It also provides the option to sort on a second column after the first. For both columns you can specify the sort order as being based on treating the data as either alphabetical or numerical. You can also sort in ascending or descending order.

The other options let you choose whether to include the first row and any header of footer rows. If the rows in the table are colored, you can specify whether to keep the row colors the same after the sort has been completed.

Here is the completed dialog.

I've specified that the table should be sorted on Column 5 in ascending alphabetical order, then on Column 1 in descending numerical order. The sort should include the first row. Here's what the sorted table looks like.
