Splitting and Merging Cells
This tutorial will show you how to split and merge the cells in a table Dreamweaver CS5.
Sometimes we need to change the size or shape of individual cells, or groups of cells. When we cannot do this by adding or deleting rows or columns, we can usually do it by merging or splitting cells.
For example, look again at this table.

Assume that we want to merge the first 2 cells in Column 1 to make a bigger cell, possibly for the purposes of putting in an image.
First of all, select the two cells. To do this click in the first and drag to the second. The outlining shows that these two cells are selected.
If you have trouble with this, another way of selecting just those two cells is to Ctrl+Click in the first then hold down the Shift key while you Click in the second

With these cells selected, look at the Properties Panel. It includes a Merge Cells button.

Click on that and the cells are merged.

Alternatively, use the Merge Cells command on the Table fly-out from the Modify menu.

It is also possible to split a cell either horizontally (into rows) or vertically (into columns).
For example, select the cell in Row 1 Column 2 as shown here.

Press the Split Cells button in the Properties Panel or use Split Cells from the Table fly-out on the Modify menu and you are asked how many rows or columns you would like it split into.

In this case I choose 2 columns, then press OK. The selected cell is split as shown.
