Web hosts are companies that specialize in providing and managing space on a server they own or lease for their clients...meaning you, the webmaster. They also provide Internet connectivity to the server and ensure that it's available as close to 100% of the time as possible.
Many web hosts also provide data storage and middleware capability as part of their hosting services.
The scope of hosting service includes everything from the most basic web page where files can be uploaded via File Transfer Protocal (FTP) or through a web interface in a browser window to very complex data driven web sites that integrate with databases to customize and allow user interactions with the content of the page.
