A website domain name is how you and your visitors refer to your website.

It's the unique website address they type into the address bar on their Internet browser to find you. It's the thing that looks like mywebsite.com, or yourwebsite.net.

A domain name is the URL (the uniform resource locator or the permanent address) for your website. When someone types in www.mywebsite.com in their browser, they'll be taken to your website.

Domain names are registered on an annual basis. You can pay a year at a time or several years in advance. They are usually registered with a domain name registrar or a website hosting provider. The registar charges you an annual fee for the right to use that the name that you choose, provided it is available. Purchasing a domain name does not get you a website. It's just a name that you can now use to refer people to your website once you create it.

Domain names typically cost between $10 and $30 per year depending on who you register it with.

Before you register a domain name, you'll want to give it some careful thought and do a lot of research before you choose one. Domain names are also unique and most of the good ones are already taken, so you'll need to do a lot of research to find the best domain name from the ones that are available for the content or subject of your website. Before you consider a domain name, you should have carefully researched the keywords for your website and content blueprint and a plan for how you will monetize or make money from your website.

Getting the Right Domain Name

As a part of your website concept and keyword research you should have an idea of how broad or narrow the scope of your website should be. In order to be profitable, the scope of your niche should be as narrow as possible, yet still offer a lot of potential for profit. Remember it's much easier to get to the top of the search engines in a narrow niche than it is to be at the top of a very broad and competitive category. It will be difficult to win at the search engines if your website concept is too broad.

Other Considerations

Be sure that your domain name is consistent and focuses on your niche. Don't try to be everything to everybody by mixing themes in your domain name. You'll dilute the search engine effectiveness.

Your domain name, website concept, ideas for content on your website should all flow toward your options for monetizing and making money with your website.

A good domain name...

• is short and sharp
• is meaningful -- that is it conveys a clear message
• is easy to spell
• is easy to remember
• is unique and descriptive
• is classic and not silly
• contains your website concept keyword
• ends in .com, .net, or .org - these are the most highly regarded domain names.

Parking a Domain Name

Domain Name parking means someone has registered a domain name, but hasn't yet created a website or used it to direct people to a website. It's kind of like putting a domain name away on reserve. Domain name parking is also used to secure several potential domain names that you may want to use in the future.

Domain name parking can be relatively inexpensive. You pay a nominal registration fee sometimes for a little as $5 a year and the domain name is yours for as long as you're willing to pay for it.
