Finding your website niche... The best and easiest way to get to the top of Google's listing is through having the most relevant site available for your website niche.
What is a website niche?
Some topics are way to broad for you and you don't have the time and resources to create a huge website. I won't say never, but it's very unlikely that you can get to the top of Google in a very broad topic. You can, however, dominate a small part of a larger market... a niche. Finding your website niche is the best way to ensure that you can get found a the top of the Google listings.
Remember the saying... "Better to be a big fish in a small pond than to be a small fish in a large pond." That's especially true in trying to make money with a website. The Internet is a huge pond!
For example, you may want to create a website about travel, but that's a huge broad topic and one that is dominated by some huge companies with vast amounts of money and resources.
I doubt that you have the time, money or resources to compete with Travelocity, Expedia, Orbitz, Priceline and the other large companies that appear at the top of Google search results for travel. But you might be able to create a website that dominates the search results for the term Palm Springs.
Palm Springs is a very small website niche part of the overall travel topic and one that if you can dominate and get a lot of traffic to your site, you'll be able to convert that traffic into a nice income.

Remember, you're creating a website so you can make money. You won't make any money if people don't know about your website. The only way you're going to do that is to be found in the search engines and attract huge amounts of traffic to your site.
The best and quickest way to be found in the search engines is to create a website for a niche topic that is small enough for you to dominate the search engines and large enough to be profitable. I would rather be in the top 20 search result listings for a small niche and make a little bit of money, than to be the 300th listing for a large niche and make no money... it's that big fish in a small pond thing all over again.
If you're goal is just to create a site and do some writing about a topic you're interested in and you're not concerned with making money with your website, then by all means, go for it. But if you want to convert your website traffice into cash, find a smaller part of the Internet to dominate.
The way to be really effective is to find your niche and become the authority on it!
Most website owners start off with trying to optimize their websites for too many broad search phrases so that they spread themselves too thin and end up not getting to the top of the search results for any of them. Instead of focusing on a few finely tuned keywords, they try to rush it with every keyword they can think of and they just don't have enough content for any of them to be effective.
If you can write enough content about a small niche, you'll be able to keep your website them very specific and Google will be in a better position to see the true relevance of your site. Don't dilute your topic. Keep it focused, and Google with reward you with a top twenty listing on many of your keywords.
Choosing your keywords carefully is another very important part of choosing your website niche and being succesfull.
