WordPress as a Website

WordPress is probably the most popular blogging application on the Internet. I use it as an extension of two of my SBI sites to add to the functionality and to benefit from the best features in both a website and a blog.

Remember I said that SBI doesn't provide this kind of tool, but it does make it possible to integrate a WordPress site into a Site Build It site.

WordPress is a powerful and robust blogging application and there are many plug-ins available that extend the functionality. It's become so powerful, in fact, that it is being compared to content management systems such as Joomla and Drupal instead of just a blogging tool.

It's also a tool that is well supported by users and developers who create plug-ins and templates that make WordPress a very useful tool.

As of this writing there are almost 8,000 plugins for WordPress that extend its functionality to do almost anything you can imagine.

Setting Up a WordPress Blog

There are two ways to set up a WordPress blog:

WordPress provides a free blog at www.wordpress.com or You can host your own installation of WordPress at your webhost.

While going with the free blog at wordpress.com is less expensive, in the long run you'll be much better off having your own domain and WordPress installation. Since WordPress is an OpenSource software, you don't need to pay any extra for the software.

To host your own installation of WordPress you need to find a web host and then download and install the software. Thankfully, many web hosting companies, like Bluehost.com, use a control panel called CPanel for site owners to administer their websites.

Webhosts that offer the CPanel also offer a program called SimpleScripts or Fantasitco DeLuxe. Both of these programs let you automatically install and set up a WordPress blog on your web host. It’s really just a matter of clicking some buttons and you're blog is ready to go.

Having your own installation of WordPress give you the most control of your blog but there are some things you need to consider. First, you are responsible for everything. If you mess something up in the installation process, accidentally delete a file that you shouldn't have, you can mess up your WordPress blog.

If you choose to set up your own installation of WordPress, once again, I recommend Bluehost.com as the best web host t do this with.

Bluehost.com provides the CPanel and there is a SimpleScripts installation of WordPress that makes it very easy to do. You can be blogging within about a half hour.
